DIY Blue and Lime Ikat Side Table

As you probably know by now, I am a DIY nut and I can’t pass up a good $5 side table, and this ugg-o was no exception. When I was scouring the isles of my favorite flea market (sorry that’s top secret info) I came across this beat up (and when I say beat up, I mean BEAT UP) side table that looked like it had a pretty rough life so I did what any sensible person would do and give it its own personality by making it into an ikat side table, of course!

Did I mention this thing was BEAT UP?! It looked like it was in a kid’s room and the kid was never given crayons and paper, instead a knife and some math problems. I kid you not, on the side was carved “2+4=6” which kudos to you kid for your sweet math skills but ask for some paper next time! Long story short, this little guy had been though the war zone and was looking at serving the remainder of his term in the junk yard – but not on my watch!

before scratched side table

The first step on the road to recovery for this soldier was to get all the gouges and scratches filled with Elmer’s Wood Filler ($6). Once the filler was dry, I used 2 cans of Krylon’s “Blue Ocean Breeze” spray paint ($4) and covered the whole table, excluding the drawer. For the drawers, I sprayed some of the paint in a plastic cup and used a paint brush to paint between each individual (faux) drawer.

I then painted the hardware with gold spray paint ($6) (gold? shocking I know) and taped off the top and painted the groove gold too. I was originally going to leave the drawers brown (lower left pic below) but it looked a little too country cottage for me so I opted to paint the drawers bright lime green! Hi-ya!

Last, I hand painted the ikat design on the top using acrylic paints and outlined it with a gold metallic sharpie ($2) then I used spray glue to line the drawer with some chevron wallpaper.

Before and After Blue Side Table

I layered in a couple ceramic pineapples, a few Anthropologie cookbooks, and an ombre lamp and we’re ready to rock-and-roll!after-tableWhat do you think love bugs? Quirky and fun or has the kooky lady gone overboard?
